Dear Parents/Guardians:
In our continuing efforts to support the well-being of our students, we will be administering a universal assessment of social, emotional & behavioral health to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students beginning on Tuesday Oct 1. The screener used for this purpose is the Behavior Intervention Monitoring and Assessment System, Second Edition (BIMAS-2). The BIMAS-2 provides a range of information regarding the academic, emotional, social and behavioral functioning of school-aged youth.
The screener consists of a brief rating scale that is going to be completed by each student. This screener helps staff to understand the strengths and needs of our students and to make effective plans at the whole school, class, and individual level. We are continually working to support the needs of our school community, including school-wide programs such as positive behavioral interventions and supports and our social-emotional learning curriculum. It is important that your child feel that academic learning is their focus at school and that the adults they work with each day are doing all they can to create a safe and supportive environment.
District staff reached out to the screener’s developers after requests by some parents to see the screener’s list of questions. The developers have agreed to let us share those questions and the rating scales with parents so they can be more informed when the screener is administered in the future.

This survey is confidential, similar to the confidentiality of your student’s educational records. Parents may request a copy of the screening results by contacting the school office. This information will not be part of your student’s transcripts or anything a college or future employer can access. If you would like more information about the universal screener and the other supports we have at our school, you can visit the webpage for the RSD Mental Health Assistance Team or email Sheldon.Weddle@rsd.edu.
There is an option for your child to not participate in the screener. If you choose to opt out of this opportunity, please complete the opt-out form by 3:00p.m Monday September 30. Please note that by completing this form, your child will not be included in the Fall 2024 school-wide screening. You will need to opt out your child for future screenings if you so choose.
Thank you,
Sheldon Weddle
